Jeremiah 31.31 is a prophecy of the new covenant and how it works.
Behold, the days come, says the Lord, that I will cut a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah, not according to the covenant that I cut with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which covenant of Mine they broke, although I was a husband to them, says the Lord; but this shall be the covenant that I will cut with the house of Israel: After those days, says the Lord, I will put My Law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. And they shall no more teach each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, Know the Lord; for they shall all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sins no more.
Jeremiah 31:31-34
Translating this from old covenant Law of Moses context to ours means seeing that It is the Law of the Spirit of Life that is being written on our hearts and inward parts. It is the writing on our heart that transforms us. Without Him we can do nothing to truly be like Him. We can be thankful that our Father is highly invested in drawing us to Himself and is very well motivated to write on our hearts as much as we will let Him.
It is a process that starts with our surrender to Jesus John 1:12. But as many as received Him, He gave to them authority to become the children of God,.... 'Become' is a transitional word that has near and far meanings. There is a beginning transition into the Kingdom which is usually a strong experience, and a steady becoming that has seasons of change and spiritual growth through time.
We are able to realise what is happening to us and either cooperate with. or hinder what our Father is doing within us. He will wait for us for a while as we struggle to come to surrender points on issues He has his finger on, but its better if we discern quickly what is happening and realise what the issue of surrender is as soon as possible.
John 1:1-10 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and without Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it. There was a man sent from God; his name was John. This one came as a witness, to bear witness concerning the Light, so that all might believe through him. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. He was the true Light; He enlightens every man coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through Him, and the world did not know Him.
The "Word" is Jesus here and it is Jesus life and nature that is written on our hearts and put within us.
This is Jesus the Word made flesh being made flesh in us. As we realise this and expect to reflect more of Jesus every day, the journey gets more fulfilling.
Because Jesus the Word is in us, dwelling in our spirit, scripture lights up for us, and our Father is available to us when we stay out of self condemnation.
Because the Word Lives in us, we are the light of the world Matthew 5:13-16 You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt loses its savor, with what shall it be salted? It is no longer good for anything, but to be thrown out and to be trodden underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under the grain-measure, but on a lampstand. And it gives light to all who are in the house.
Because the Word is in us, we are made the Word to the world around us.
This is not something we strive for or a law we have to keep, it is something He is doing in us that we can cooperate with or not. Surrendering to Jesus for the beginning of transformation at our entry to the Kingdom, becomes a lifestyle of surrendering to our Father daily. There is where we find the power to walk with Him as He transforms us by writing more on our hearts that agrees with Him - His heart, His mind, His ways - and we find that we are living our lives more and more as we see, in scripture, that Jesus did on earth before us.
